CGCB 605  Natural Products Chemistry (2 credits)

Course Description :
     Natural products from various sources including plants, marine organisms and microorganisms will be introduced. The course will cover different aspects of various classes of natural products, including structure elucidation, synthesis, and uses. Different pathways of the biosynthesis of natural products, including (but not limited to) acetate, shikimate, and mevalonate pathways, will also be discussed. Particular emphasis will be placed on the biosynthesis of alkaloids and oxygen heterocycles. The course will also explore some applications of natural products in food, cosmetics, and particularly medicine. Some emphasis will be given in the area of mechanism(s) of action of some drugs either derived from or used in the form of natural products.
