CGET 613 Systemic Toxicology (3 credits)

CGET 501 Integrated Life Sciences or equivalent

Course Description:

The contents cover the toxic effects of chemicals and toxic substances on organ systems such as liver and gastrointestinal tract, renal, cardiovascular, respiratory, hematopoietic, reproductive, nervous and immune systems. The effects on eye, ear and skin are also included. Emphasis is on understanding of both direct and indirect effects of toxicants on each organ and the relations of functions among organ systems. The toxic agents that are widely used nowadays are emphasized which include pesticides, heavy metals, industrial chemicals, naturally occurring toxins from plants, animals and microorganisms, chemical and biological warfare agents, and radioactive compounds. The primary toxic signs and symptoms, route of exposure, prevention of exposure, and general management of poisoning are also included.
